White

The pale custodians of Society law and its cult of Color, who judge in courts and pronounce the hierarchy's moral justifications.

Whites keep the Society's conscience in a form it can use. Their sermons assure every Color that its station is natural.

They go barefoot in snow-white robes. Darrow's admission to the Institute is examined by Whites and a Copper of its board, with a machine on his finger.

Whites give the hierarchy its moral vocabulary. They staff the courts and preach that each Color has its place in a natural order. Their authority is real, but its limit is plain: a White can pronounce judgement on nearly anyone, and a Gold can have the verdict changed.
